This is a place where I will write about life growing up in South Philly in the 80′s. Since I left South Philly (only went to South Jersey!) and started working in an office with people from around the country, I noticed that I was blessed. Blessed to grow up in a place with so much culture and pride. I often tell stories of my life as a kid in South Philly, and I am surprised when people listen. It seems that there is not many other places like it, excluding a few other cities on the East Coast (New York mostly). With this blog I hope to bring back the memories of the good ol’ days. The days when being a kid was good thing with no rush to grow up. When dad worked, mom stayed home and cooked and the kids played dead box or jail break until the street lights went out.
Use the links on the right side to explore life in South Philly. If you grew up in South Philly, and have a story to share, by all means click the contact/submit link on the right and shoot it over. We would love to have input from other people who grew up in South Philly in any era.
We would love stories about any games, customs, terminology, culture, memories, etc… Long or short share your thoughts!

Does anyone remember Reds Hoagies, at 9th and Mifflin
Red’s was around the corner from my grandparents house! I would get an Italian hoagie with oil and a franks cream soda all the time!!!
I went to bok half the day and goretti in the pm. We always went to reds
I went to Reds 2 weeks ago. Still great!!
I used to live right down the street from Red’s! Who can forget their hoagies? I grew up on them, before I even knew what Tony Luke’s was, or Geno’s!
I remember Reds Hoagies I went to Bok and we would by them for lunch. Never ate a better Hoagie in my life.
Al Cialella
I lived at 9th + Pierce sts growing up so I was right around the corner and enjoyed hundreds (if not a thousand…lol) Ham and Cheese hoagies with hot. Yeah baby, that was the ticket. Reds was (is) the best. Now I live in California (no hoagies, no cheesesteaks, no nothing (well maybe Mexican food…lol)…and I HATE IT….I comin home as soon as this stinkin recession ends …I’d do it now except that my wonderful california home is worth about 1/3 of what I paid for it. Ready to blow it up…lol
When I was in high school, I’d meet my friends who went to Neumann (I went to The Prep) at Red’s in the morning. We would stock up on hoagies and sell them at school for a profit to all the kids who weren’t from the neighborhood. I think they were $0.75 for a ham and cheese with everything.
Red’s is still open!!!
i love south philly…i grew up on 29th and wharton…graysferry was a great place!!!
Anybody remember Willie’s roast beef and pork or their waterice at 9th & Christian?
I went to BOk, right across the street from Red’s. They were
and still are the best hoagies in Philly. I am still mystified how something so simple could taste so good.
I grew up in grays ferry and my parents still live there. Great place to grow up and live. I yea I do remember Red’s hogies the best place ever haven’t been there in a while but now that I know its opened I will go back

I grew up on 9th & Annin Sts, and the only place we went to was Pat’s Steaks and then Gino’s. I went to Hallahan, and remember the guys picking us up in their cars 1/2 block from school so the nuns wouldn’t see us. Oh, what great times we had…
Hi My name is Bernice I live in South Philly all my teenage life & my marriage life then in 2005 I went to NJ & love it I want to know if anyone lived on 4th & Wolf contact me on Facebook Bernice Mahoney also I am looking for old classmates form Sharswood 1969-79 & Furness Jr High 79-80 TY Bernice God Bless <
I worked at my families business at 11th + Wharton and used to alternate between Ricci Bros and Reds all the time.
It was just the best to grow up in South Philly.
I grew up at 7th and Ritner and lived there till I was 42. Then we moved to Jersey, but moved back to Philly (but not South Philly this time.)
My mother used to say: there are two kinds of people in the world….Italians and those who wish they were! Went to St. Monica’s and Goretti…..graduated in 1969! All my homeroom girlfriends were Irish either from 2nd St. to 30th St. Madone, how they loved to come over my house and eat dinner! LOL
At lunch in Goretti, I’d sell them my fried pepper/breaded veal cutlet sandwiches on Italian rolls for their lunch money to buy cigarettes after school! Shut up! I am so proud of my South Philly roots………when I had my children, I moved to Wa. Twnshp., NJ (the 2nd So. Philly)! …..those were my glory days (Bruce Springsteen)
I often reminiss about growing in South Philadelphia 2nd and Mifflin St. I loved everything about being a kid there it just seemed so magical, from playing stickball at Furness to going to school at Sacred Heart. We moved to Fla. when I was in 6th grade(1968), and I always find myself gong back to the old neighborhood whenever I get a chance. I take my wife and children and now Grand children and talk about the magical place I grew up.
I went to St. Mary’s @ 7th & Christian. Does anybody remember “Mushie’s” across from school? We used to buy “loosies”(cigarettes) 2 for quarter.I have the best memories and funny stories from my days at St.Mary’s.Either you went to St. Mary’s or St. Paul’s
Hello there guys. Thanks for writing about Philly and the good old days. I lived in North Philly in 1969 I remember enjoying two types of Hoagies. One was called just a “Hoagie”. The other was a steak Hoagie. If memory serves me right, neither sandwich as what today are called Hoagies. Does anyone remember those days or any of these sandwiches and if so, can you tell me if my memory is right or am I just confused?
Thanks for your answers!
I love this site! I’m origanilly from 12th and Wolf.
What a great site to write down and to read other’s SoPhil memories. I lived in quite a few places in SoPhil during my 47yrs there (I now live in California )-:)…Let’s see, I lived at 6th + Moore sts during young teens…Lived around 9th+Morris preteens…..Lived btwn 5th-6th Mountain sts and 8th-9th Mountain sts most of the rest of the years (and a few years in Drexel Hill. I can’t even begin to list all of the wonderful memories I have from all of those neighborhoods and the fabulous neighbors and friends I had in those neighborhoods so I will just say that I miss those days very much and will never, never forget them until they stick me in the ground and cover me wit dirt….lol. Even after being in California for the past 9 years I am still an avid Flyers, Eagles and Phillies fan and watch as many games as I could (I can’t stand the Lakers, 49ers and Giants (-:. Well, I vented now so, see youse guys later and take care all.
I lived in South Philly from 1994-1997. We rented a row house on the corner at 2nd and Mifflin. I was in the Navy and rented the house with some shipmates. My friend and roomates Godmother owned the building. I really loved my time in South Philly. We had a few problems fitting in at first, but the neighborhood accepted us. I will always remember the soup parties and Mummers parades. I have shown my kids the place that I spent my youth and have shown them South Philly. Thank you Philly for the memories.
18 N Morris St
I used to go to Red’s every weekend. My dad would take me swimming at the public pool that used to be next to Goretti. Best hoagies ever!!
